If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, you may be exploring ways to support their memory, wellbeing, and quality of life. One widely recommended approach in the UK is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) – a simple but effective programme designed to help people with mild to moderate dementia stay mentally active and socially connected.
What Is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy?
CST is a group of structured sessions that include enjoyable activities such as:
- Word games and puzzles
- Creative tasks like drawing or singing
- Reminiscence and storytelling
- Light problem-solving and themed discussions
Each session lasts about 45 minutes to an hour and typically runs twice a week for 14 weeks. The sessions are guided by a trained facilitator and always follow a set format to make them comfortable and predictable.
The focus isn’t on testing memory, but on having fun, boosting confidence, and encouraging conversation.
Why Is CST Recommended?
CST has been shown in research studies to improve:
- Memory and thinking skills
- Communication and confidence
- Overall enjoyment of life
It’s the only non-drug therapy for dementia recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in the UK, meaning it’s backed by strong evidence and is safe and effective.
Many carers also notice that their loved ones seem happier, more talkative, and more engaged after joining CST sessions.
What Happens After the 14 Weeks?
Once the initial CST course is completed, some areas offer Maintenance CST (MCST) – weekly follow-up sessions that can continue for months or even longer. These help your loved one keep up the benefits and stay socially connected.
At Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW we offer Maintenance CST (MCST) in our Support & Social Groups. All our Group activities are planned in line with MCST principles, and our Group Facilitators are trained to deliver CST and MCST.
You may also be able to find sessions available online, which can be helpful for people who live in rural areas or have mobility difficulties.
Can I join in as a Carer?
CST is usually just for the person living with dementia, to encourage independent interaction with others. However, carers are often involved behind the scenes — helping with travel arrangements, encouraging participation, or talking to the facilitator about what your loved one enjoys. At Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW Support & Social Groups carers often participate in MCST to help their loved one or the loved one of a fellow carer to participate.
What Are the Benefits for You as a Carer?
Many family carers say that CST brings positive changes at home, including:
- More meaningful conversations
- A lift in your loved one’s mood
- A sense of shared purpose and hope
- Some valuable personal time while your loved one attends sessions
It can also ease the pressure of feeling like you have to “do it all,” by giving your loved one structured stimulation in a supportive environment.
