Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW is delighted to announce the appointment of Monica Vaughan OBE, the celebrated Paralymic swimming champion and multiple gold medal winner, as its new Patron.
Monica is widely recognised for her outstanding sporting career, having represented Great Britain on the international stage and achieved remarkable success at the Paralympic Games. Her dedication, determination and contribution to sport were recognised with the award of an Order of the British Empire (OBE).
While Monica’s sporting achievements are inspirational, it is her personal connection to the charity’s mission that makes her appointment especially meaningful. As the devoted carer for her partner, Lynn, who is living with dementia, Monica has first-hand experience of the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by the condition. Her understanding of the emotional, practical and often complex realities of dementia gives her a powerful voice in advocating for better support and awareness.
As Patron, Monica will work alongside Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW to help raise awareness of dementia, champion the needs of those living with the condition and their families, and promote the charity’s vital services across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Caring for my partner Lynn has given me a deep understanding of what living with dementia really means, not just for the individual but for those who care for them. I am passionate about helping ensure that no one faces this journey alone, and I look forward to supporting the charity’s vital work.”

Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW provides information, guidance, peer support, dementia-friendly activities and practical advice to people living with dementia and those who care for them. The charity is committed to creating dementia-friendly communities where everyone affected by dementia can access the support, understanding and connection they need.
Monica’s appointment marks an exciting milestone for the charity as it continues to expand its reach and impact across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Her advocacy, lived experience and passion for supporting others will play an important role in helping more families access support and ensuring that no one faces dementia alone.
